The 4 Essays: How to Write Winning Responses
Essay 1: Leadership and Influence
Use concrete examples of times you led a team, influenced a decision, or created change. Quantify impact: "I led a team of 8 to implement a water purification system serving 5,000 villagers" is far stronger than "I have good leadership skills." Show progression and growth in your leadership journey.
Essay 2: Networking
Demonstrate how you build and maintain professional relationships. Discuss specific networks you belong to and how they have contributed to your professional development. Explain how you plan to use the Chevening network to benefit Nepal after returning.
Essay 3: Study in the UK
Explain why you need this specific Masters degree, why the UK is the best place for it, and how the UK's academic approach differs from alternatives. Research your chosen universities thoroughly. Mention specific modules, professors, and research centers that interest you.
Essay 4: Career Plan
Present a clear 5-year career plan connecting your work experience, Masters degree, and future impact on Nepal. Be specific: "I will join Nepal's Department of Urban Development as a senior planner, applying sustainable urban design principles from my UCL Masters to Kathmandu's expansion plan" is much stronger than "I want to help Nepal develop."
Interview Preparation
If shortlisted, you will be interviewed at the British Embassy in Kathmandu. The panel includes British diplomats and sometimes Chevening alumni. Common questions:
- Tell us about yourself and your career journey
- Why this specific Masters program?
- How will you contribute to Nepal after returning?
- Give an example of a time you demonstrated leadership
- How will you use the Chevening network?
Tips: be concise, specific, and authentic. Practice with a mentor or friend. Show genuine passion for your field and commitment to Nepal.
